I remember having anxiety. My therapist asked me about my morning rituals. I said, “Hmmm. I press snooze like fifteen times. I rush out of bed, realizing I am late to work, quickly brush my teeth, quickly put my clothes, and have a protein bar for breakfast all within 20 – 30 minutes.

She started laughing.

I was confused because I thought a therapist was supposed to come with no judgment.

She said, “The only reason you have anxiety is that you are on the go right from the start of the day. You need to have morning routines and rituals to set your day up for success.”

She was right. The morning is one of the only times to yourself throughout your busy day. I had this habit since I was in middle school. I had to wake up at 5:30 AM to catch two buses just to get to school.

I DREADED school.

I went to a Tony Robbins seminar, and he said, “You cannot change your life if you cannot change your state.” When we are in a negative state, it is hard to accomplish our goals.

What is the first thing we do in the morning?

Check our phones. When we check our phone, we look at social media like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or the new or our to-do list or our emails. This causes us to feel negative and anxious. We can’t have a productive day feeling negative and anxious. Most successful people have morning routines.

Benefits of having morning rituals

  • You become more productive
  • You start your day relaxed to make more quality decisions
  • It sets the tone for the rest of the day
  • You have more clarity
  • You are more attentive

My morning rituals

  1. 20 – 25 minutes of physical activity with positive music and visualization. This ranges from walking, running, lifting weights, or an at-home workout. The physical activity gets the blood pumping to the rest of the body, most importantly the brain. Visualization helps me manifest my day and my goals. I usually visualize me accomplishing my goals or speaking to thousands of people around the world impacting their life.

  2. 10 – 15 minutes of meditation and gratitude. I type in meditation music on YouTube and find a video to play. I do the 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 method. I breathe in for seven seconds (my stomach expands while I do that not my chest), I hold it in for seven seconds, I release for seven seconds, and then hold it in for another 7 seconds. I repeat for around 10 minutes.

After that, I practice gratitude. I put my right hand over my heart (since I am right-handed) and my left hand over my right hand. I feel three things that I am grateful for. This could be something big like my girlfriend, friends, family, house, health, or the food I eat. It could be something small like a compliment some told me, someone opening the door for me, or an experience I had. Or it could be a negative experience that happened recently or a long time ago. It is the bad things that happen in our life that lead to good things. Studies show that gratitude and meditation rewire our brain to be more positive.

  3. 10 minutes of journaling. I get all my thoughts I have, whether they are negative or positive down on paper. Journaling improves my mood, helps me prioritize my day, and reduces any stress. When I have my thoughts on paper, it permits me for my thoughts to not ruin my day.

This is what I do as my morning rituals. It takes anywhere from 40 – 50 minutes before I have breakfast. You may not have as much time, and your morning rituals do not have to be as long.

How much time do you need??

15 minutes….

Starter’s Morning Rituals

5 minutes of physical activity with high beat music and visualization – Get your heart pumping blood to the rest of the body. While doing this, make sure you listen to upbeat music and visualize overcoming your challenges in life, accomplishing your goals, or conquering your day. This will help you get excited for the day.

5 minutes of meditation and gratitude – Follow the 7x7x7x7 method and do 7 deep breaths followed by imagining three things you are grateful for.

5 minutes of journaling – Get your thoughts down on paper and give yourself the permission to not worry about it for the rest of the day.
Do these rituals consistently for 30 days. Don’t skip a day. If you skip a day, start all over. You’re going to realize how different you feel after the 30 days, and you will be on your way to success.

Those three things are starter rituals. Once you get the hang of morning rituals and routines, customize it to what fits you the best.

Morning rituals you can do to switch it up

  • Workout, meditate, journal longer
  • Read
  • Draw
  • Call a loved one
  • Dance
  • Cold showers
  • Drink hot tea, coffee, or lemon water and sit in silence
  • Work on your passion project

What some successful people do to start their morning off

  • Barack Obama – Exercise, drink green tea and stay on top of his current affairs
  • Oprah – Treadmill, meditation, prepare a nice meal
  • Bill Gates – Reads

You see, these successful people are super busy, and they made time for morning rituals. If they made time for a morning routine, so can you.

Wake up 15 – 30 minutes earlier (which may require you to go to sleep a little bit earlier).

In 1 – 2 months, you will start seeing a difference in the way you conquer your day.
